Chapter 20,21

There have been many events that have shaped our worlds history.  Not only have events shaped our history but also have impacted and influenced many other actions, behaviors, and how we as individuals in society think about things. The aftermath of world war 1 led to substantial social and cultural changes.  One of the developments by French officials that was surprising was that of Mother's Day. I did not know that this day came about as a "new holiday designed to encourage childbearing and thus replace the millions lost in the war."  Also, while I am aware of the different movements and new styles and attitudes that arose such as "flappers," I was not aware that "consumerism" encouraged the purchase of things like cars, washing machines, irons, and so on.  The massive violence of WWII is so haunting.  Bombings, concentration camps, starvation and the Holocaust are events that no one should have had to live through.  Septembe. r 11th is a very memorable day and is still so vivid.  Yes, there are events that we wish to never live through, but have shaped our history and have progressed our world forward.
It is amazing to understand the widespread impact of WWI and WWII.  One major event was the building of Socialism.  The creation of Socialism involved an "attack" on class and gender, and promotion of selflessness and collectivism to name a few.  Under Marxist ideoldiaogy, top ranks were expected to remain disciplined and loyal.    Under totalitarian control. everyday pleasures such as the arts, media, and education were operated under certain conditions that needed to be followed and independence and freedoms characterized by the west were not allowed.
While this may be changing subjects slightly, when considering the government control then and even today in other countries, I am so grateful to live in the U.S.  Yes our government may have its share of ups-and downs but there is a sense of order without loosing freedom.  When I traveled to Ethiopia, I took notice of the chaos that surrounded me.  In my opinion at least it was chaos.  Chaos because of a lack of roadways,  no stop lights or stop signs, no rules regarding which side cars or people should be on,no speed limits.  Basically, people, cars, livestock all had the right of way and it was a matter of push and shove and cars being pushed off the road.  In sharing this experience I want to emphasize the two sides of control with no independence, and lack of control with chaotic freedom and then the U.S. with control and our ability to have freedom but on a daily basis at least have a sense of safety as well.
